Chapter Thirteen

Cassandra had only just finished dressing the next morning when the door slid open and Kernan rushed in. She blushed, wondering what to say.

He skidded to a halt in front of her and hissed, ‘On his way. Plan B?’

‘What — ’ She took a deep breath. Grendon was coming — was now the time to make him not want her any more?

That would mean kissing Kernan, touching him, and after last night…

‘No.’

Kernan quirked an eyebrow but that was all the time he had to respond as the door opened and Grendon came in.

This morning, the Great Youson was in a flashing combination of fuchsia and orange that hurt Cassandra’s eyes. She focussed on his face and noted the black eyes and creases on his forehead.

Grendon glared at Kernan. ‘I would speak to you in private, Cassandra.’ His voice had the hollow ring of a person in a great deal of pain.

Cassandra felt a twinge of guilt. She really didn’t hate Grendon and it wasn’t fair that he had to suffer like this.

‘Of course.’ She nodded at Kernan, who rolled his eyes before snapping to attention, saluting and leaving.

Grendon’s teeth glittered in the morning light. Peace, how did he get them so white? ‘Of course. Last night was incandescent, my love.’ But there was a twist to his mouth that signalled he was pissed.

Well, that was only fair — he believed he had finally got Cassandra into bed but couldn’t remember it.

‘I’m glad,’ Cassandra said. ‘After all this time, I’d hate to think I disappointed you.’

‘Nor I you.’

‘Oh, you could never disappoint me.’

Grendon grinned, finally convinced he’d done the job and done it well, even if he couldn’t remember. ‘Tonight will be even better, my darling. I swear.’

Cassandra silently swore that she wouldn’t be in Flactor by the time night fell. ‘That is wonderful to hear, Grendon. I’m afraid I have more warehouses to visit today. Will you or Hactrim accompany me?’

‘No,’ Grendon said. ‘We are much too busy. But I will have a full security detail with you.’

Damn, Cassandra thought. She’d hoped that she and Kernan would have time alone so they could finally talk, and not just about last night. They’d not had a single conversation about the theft or the investigation since they arrived in Flactor.

So she was astounded when she stepped out of the room with Grendon and saw only Kernan waiting. He fell in behind them and Cassandra tried not to
