Chapter Thirteen
Cassandra had only just finished dressing the next morning when the door slid open and Kernan rushed in. She blushed, wondering what to say.
He skidded to a halt in front of her and hissed, âOn his way. Plan B?â
âWhat â â She took a deep breath. Grendon was coming â was now the time to make him not want her any more?
That would mean kissing Kernan, touching him, and after last nightâ¦
âNo.â
Kernan quirked an eyebrow but that was all the time he had to respond as the door opened and Grendon came in.
This morning, the Great Youson was in a flashing combination of fuchsia and orange that hurt Cassandraâs eyes. She focussed on his face and noted the black eyes and creases on his forehead.
Grendon glared at Kernan. âI would speak to you in private, Cassandra.â His voice had the hollow ring of a person in a great deal of pain.
Cassandra felt a twinge of guilt. She really didnât hate Grendon and it wasnât fair that he had to suffer like this.
âOf course.â She nodded at Kernan, who rolled his eyes before snapping to attention, saluting and leaving.
The few seconds gave Cassandra time to decide how she was going to play this. She couldnât end things with Grendon yet â he could still be important in finding out what was going on.
She smiled at Grendon and held out her hands. âGood morning. I hope youâre as happy as I am.â
Grendon frowned and walked forward, taking her hands in his. âYouâre happy?â
Obviously, he couldnât remember too much of the night before and needed reassurance. âVery. Why, arenât you?â She hoped the tone of hurt that she injected into her voice was worth it.
Grendonâs teeth glittered in the morning light. Peace, how did he get them so white? âOf course. Last night was incandescent, my love.â But there was a twist to his mouth that signalled he was pissed.
Well, that was only fair â he believed he had finally got Cassandra into bed but couldnât remember it.
âIâm glad,â Cassandra said. âAfter all this time, Iâd hate to think I disappointed you.â
âNor I you.â
âOh, you could never disappoint me.â
Grendon grinned, finally convinced heâd done the job and done it well, even if he couldnât remember. âTonight will be even better, my darling. I swear.â
Cassandra silently swore that she wouldnât be in Flactor by the time night fell. âThat is wonderful to hear, Grendon. Iâm afraid I have more warehouses to visit today. Will you or Hactrim accompany me?â
âNo,â Grendon said. âWe are much too busy. But I will have a full security detail with you.â
Damn, Cassandra thought. Sheâd hoped that she and Kernan would have time alone so they could finally talk, and not just about last night. Theyâd not had a single conversation about the theft or the investigation since they arrived in Flactor.
So she was astounded when she stepped out of the room with Grendon and saw only Kernan waiting. He fell in behind them and Cassandra tried not to
